Jadeite Shanzi

The piece of Shanzi Sculpture is made of Burma Jadeite. On the front, Guanyin (a Bodhisattva) stands on her lotus throne with an affable smile and a Ruyi (a sign of good luck in China) in her hand. With her are two boys. The one on the left, supported by a cloud, holds a magical vase for her while the boy on the other side sits cross-leggedly on another cloud with his palms put together. Deep in the mountains behind them appears a pavilion. Lying below, a rippling and glistening pond is filled with lotus blossoms, in the middle of which a boy riding a carp looks up adoringly at Guanyin.

On the back, Merit Buddha emerges from a propitious cloud with an arhat praying on either side. Clusters of clouds blur the pavilions and buildings behind them. Despite the complex structure and the considerable number of characters, the work presents a vivid coherent picture of a group of Buddhism figures while focusing on the portrayal of Guanyin. Guanyin, a rather popular figure in Buddhism, has been universally worshipped in both ancient and modern China for she is believed to bring happiness and ward off calamities. In the work, meditative and amiable, she shows refined grace and kindly love with round cheeks, a restful smile as well as an easy manner. The features: ingenious use of the luster of the material and the shades of the color.
