Sculpt Introduction

  1. Yangzhou Shanzi carving craft began in the Yuan, Ming dynasties and culminated in the Qing dynasty. Now in modern times, Yangzhou craftsmen make efforts to carry forward and further develop the unique art, which has shown its brilliance again. In the course of creation, the craftsmen take the natural beautiful shape and luster into consideration and apply different designs and, accordingly, different techniques. Figures, mounts, waters, flowers, birds, fishes, worms, rare fowls, beasts or other patterns are arranged in harmony in a coherent picture with multiple layers and profound implications.

  2. Among the utensils, the chain, typical of daintiness, is also worth noting. The chain ring in North China usually wears a bathtub-like pattern, whose inner diameter reaches 15mm since smaller ones are impossible to make. The unique Yangzhou craft manages to make the chain ring as tiny as a soybean, round, delicate and exquisite.

  3. Flower jade articles are new arrivals among Yangzhou jade wares. They are noted for their well-rounded shape, luxuriant branches and leaves, distinct gradation and charming grace. Petals, leaves and branches coil, fold, overlap and interweave in even density as naturally as the real ones do. Even the fine wrinkles on the pistil and the stalk are handled with extreme delicacy. They are by all means worthy of the title of ¡°natural creations¡±. The craftsmen draw their material from real life, i.e., the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, peony, China rose, pompon, etc. Besides imitating and reflecting real life, they also attach great importance to making creative innovations, which make their works rich in artistic appeal.

  4. Birds are rather lively creatures and, therefore, have become favorite subject matters of the Yangzhou jade art. Yangzhou craftsmen have been well versed in portraying phoenixes, cranes, paradise flycatchers, peacocks, parrots, golden pheasants, tits and other fowls. They take painstaking efforts to faithfully reflect birds¡¯ tiny movements like opening the mouth and putting out the tongue. Moreover, the hollowed-out paws and the exquisitely carved feather contribute to adding to clarity and orderliness of their works, which appear dynamic, vivid and lifelike.

  5. Yangzhou figure jade articles are graceful, exquisite, dainty and natural. With a rich variety of themes and contents, these works have broken with the past simple design and pattern of ancient ladies and harmonized innovatively figures and scenes in a multiple-layered picture, highlighting the inner world of the characters. In this way, the figures are able to appear lifelike and rich in expressions.

  6. Yangzhou craftsmen, learning from designs of bronze vessels, have made a great many original and tasteful jade vessels, among which incense burners and stoves are stylistically characteristic of the Yangzhou jade art. Jade stoves made in North China, from the three-foot Yuan stove in the Qing Dynasty to the modern Beijing stove, have a pair of big ears with two active rings attached. Looking like a jar, they appear unrestrained and stocky, typical of the North grandness. On the contrary, the three-foot stove made by Yangzhou craftsmen are hollowed out and elaborately wrought, whose elegant chufa-like shape seems ingenious and delicate.

  7. Pseudo-classic animal items are also rather popular. These vivid works are characterized as full, succinct and relevant, and demonstrate the superb skills of craftsmen. The hairs look genuine in that they are as thin as the real ones and caved in an orderly way without a single one broken. These works have achieved great improvement on their predecessors, worthy of appreciation and collection.

  8. Other miscellaneous jade articles, designed in accordance with the material and made of exquisite workmanship, are dainty, delicate, coherent, vivid and natural. They are suitable for display as signs of good luck as well as works of art with great improvement in the design, style, pattern, originality and workmanship.
